think of it as a relay/fuse

If there is a problem between your ecu and coil packs your ignitor is supposed to be what blows. You ecu sends a signal to your ignitor telling it to send a signal to your coil to ground which causes your coil to send a spark to your plug.

With that said, there is no benefit to plain out swapping to a different chip. I do however wish there was a way to know if one was more resistant to longer dwell settings. This could lead to a performance increase on tunable ecus/stand alones.
 
^Pretty much - the ignitor is a transistor pack. A transistor is used instead of a relay or switch because it can operate at much higher frequencies. It doesn't send a signal but rather "opens a gate" between the coilpack and the ground to make it charge for a period of time.

It does what the old style mechanical points do in a distributor
