What if I want my car to be quiet...

If I wanted to make my car quiet (and I mean REALLY quiet) what should I do? I haven't been able to find any silencing exhaust that adds horsepower as well as making it quieter. I intend on racing on back roads in Northern Connecticut and I want my car as quiet as possible so no one calls the police or anything like that. I also live in a residential neighborhood and I don't want to wake people up late at night. So:

Is there any silencing exhaust that adds horsepower made specifically for the S14?

Where can I get it?

Are there are things I can do to make the car quiet?

Thanks!

A decent aftermarket exhaust with a decent sized muffler wont be that loud especially if you arent romping on it....I used to have a Tanabe G-power Medallion exhaust on my integra....sounded perfect at normal speeds and great hauling ass.

leaving it stock will obviously be the quietest option. even flooring your stock setup, your neighbors will hear your car. so if you really wanted a something quieter than stock, i'm going on a limb and say there is nothing that exists that would offer power gains & be quieter than your stock setup.

get an intake. those are pretty quiet as long as you don't floor it.

if you want more power, you'll have to compromise on some other things...like sound (quiet sound)

i am not a big fan of loud exhaust myself. if i were you i would get custom 2.5" catback pipes and a stock dual outlet muffler with a tip on it, i did this on my old car because it had no catalytic converter and it sounded like shit until i upgraded the piping and got a new muffler, which made it quiet. or another option, the one i chose this time, is to get a greddy cat-back exhuast, they are known for being pretty quiet, but it will still be louder than stock.

Ok, more good advice. I had another thought though (I know, they just keep popping up). What if I split the exhaust early in the piping, allowing more airflow, and putting two quiet mufflers at the end of each pipe. Wouldn't that allow more air flow, increase horespower, and still be quieter or just as quiet? My theory is this:

Normal 240sx exhaust:
sound = x
air flow = y

If you double the airflow with the dual exhaust you're not increasing the sound by much. However, let's assume there is no muffler on either pipe.

Dual exhaust:
sound = 2x
airflow = 2y

Now if you put mufflers on that cut the sound level in half then you have:

sound = x
airflow = 2y

Doubling the ammount of air flow and keeping the same sound. Of course I don't know much about exhaust or mufflers for that matter but I'm using plain old logic to come to this conclusion. If this is incorrect or off, let me know.

Thanks again for all the help guys.

I think you are going a little overboard on this exhaust thing, you will be adding a shitload of weight and probably wont even be able to route two different pipes let alone mufflers under the car...put a good (read: no cheap shit) JAPANESE exhaust system on if your neighbors dont like it when you ARENT romping on it at 2am...screw them and do doughnuts in their fuckin front yard.

damn chen! jus get an exhaust wit a silencer. if loudness is a problem, push your car to the end of the street :) jp...
or jus go down the street at 10mph, the exhaust shouldnt even kick in, and when you get away from dem neighbors floor it out and da nite just seemed to get a litle louder
Peace

greddy is coming out with an SP2 exhaust system for the 240. and that new RS-R EX-MAG is supposed to be real quiet and produce good hp. thats what i am waiting for.

If you put enough dynomat in your car, you'll add a considerable amount of weight. An issue if weight savings is important to you.

Also, the dynomat suggestion is a good idea, if the driver was concerned with the sound inside of the car. If he is concerned about other people in his neighborhood, dynomatting won't do a whole lot a good.

What is dynomatting? Is that where you put some sort of material around the car in order to block sound? If that is the case, is it possible to put that material around the engine bay? I want to make my car very quiet, and if that will help, even a little, I'm all for it. If it is possible to put it around the engine bay then how much would it cost?

dynomat is for absorbing the vibrations that bass causes. it basically reduces rattling. Hatchbacks dont need it because since the trunk door has a window, it already comes pretty well insulated. its a sticky sheet of paper that you put all over the inside of your trunk door and other various spots with rattling.

bass is all about pushing air

futhermore, hatchbacks are better for bass because the trunk isnt enclosed into a seperate campartment and the bass can push air flow freely throughout the entire car, where as a regular trunk, the bass can only go straight into the trunk lid making the metal rattle. this is why people who have bass in a trunk put their backseat down to let the bass push air all the way through the entire car, creating a hatchback like sound to the bass. even cracking the windows is better for reducing the rattling because it allows the bass to push the air straight out of the car instead of into a window or peice of metal that will rattle.

as far as dynomat for covering up sounds outside of your car - although it wasnt meant for it the only thing i can think of is to wrap the damn sticky dynomat paper around your muffler I IN NO WAY RECOMMEND THIS OR WOULD EVER TRY IT MYSELF, but it may reduce the rattling of the exhaust muffler.

its kinda the same way a silencer for a gun works

dude if you wrap dynomat around your muffler that shit will fry! itll smoke like hell! and smell bad and that wont do anything for the noise coming out of the hole, you've got some of the best advice ive ever heard already because even an intake makes your car louder

kinda weird, but put a heat shield around your whole exhaust, like hella shield, then put on the dynomat.....? dunno, prob still be too hot
