Alright guys long time lurker is gonna give this a shot and hopefully come out the other end with more knowledge and who knows maybe even help some others along the way. My experience with 240s arnt as great as most of the people on this forum but do have mechanical experience both with working in a shop and working on my daily RSX. About a year ago i bought my first 240 and did an auto to manual swap on the little single cam in it but after some time had passed i realized it just wasn't going to be what i wanted in the end so im parting that out as we speak (for sale threads comming soon). I just picked up a vert that i plan to sr swap (wanting black top but not really picky). and decided ill post my build thread and parts list on here since it was an old member long ago that made me fall in love with this swap, his thred can be found HERE if you really wanna learn anything about this swap this is the post to look at.

Essential Parts List: (With Company Name)
Shell
Sr20 w/Trans
Harness (Wiring Specialist)

Greddy Intake Manifold
Stage 2 Competition Clutch Kit
Isis 5 Lug Conversion
Ksport GT Pro Damper Suspension
Greddy Oil Filter Relocator

If You Guys have any suggestions on parts or something that i will need but didn't list in the first list just let me know. Pictures coming soon.

Edit: This will be a list of the parts I actually buy for this build so people can easily see whats been added. This will be updated as parts come in.
Turbo Manifold (Tomie)
Gasket Kit (Isis (ISR))
Exhaust Manifold Studs (ER)

That parts list is gonna cost you a nice chunk

I just got my motor from Jspec, showed up with the clutch fan assembly kind broken but now entirely useless and theres oil all over the fan and right under the crank pulley.

J spec is alright so far, then theres MD JDM motors and Japanese engine import is still reputable.

Go for an s13 blacktop theyre not much more money

i already prices out everything the first list is over 5k and same with the seconed one but id rather do it right and the way i want then just rush something. As for the places thank you for the info ill be checking them out.

Also was wondering if anyone knows if notch tops are worth that extra bit to drop in a s13 or if i should just stick with the s13 black top

#5 ·
Do you mean notch tops as in S14 srs?
That depends on the type of build you are doing. If you are rebuilding either one (recommended) it wont make a huge difference internally. S14/15 Srs have VCT which is Nissans version of Vtec. If you are rebuilding and just keeping it a stock setup then you will notice a slight difference in favor of the S14 sr and its lower portion of the torque curve. Basically you feel more power at lower rpms.

I would just get an S13 blacktop and use the money saved from buying an s14 sr and just buy a nice tomei manifold. I only bought an s14 sr because i had an s14 chassis and I am ocd about keeping it "period correct/ not ghetto looking" ( in my opinion I think it looks ghetto having s13 redtops in the zenkis which I see so many of in my area)

Honestly, plan to start a swap with at least like 4 grand in cash set aside for your swap. This will set you off nicely assuming you bought a nice motorset.

Look up positrons thread about his sr20det prep.

Yah he was the one who inspired me to do it right i just relized in my first post the link is broken so ill fixe that but his build thread is amazing and i think ill just do the black top then if thats the case. Also change of plans ill be doing it in the s1e coupe instead of the vert my friend sold it the day before my paycheck came in sad face.

Took forever but finally got the car and some pictures. Right now its arunning and driving k24de.
Image
Before I begin the sr swap I'm gunna tackle some small stuff so i can enjoy the car wile i prep the engine. First thing im planning to tackle are 5 lug swap, new rims (sold the ones in the picture so its on steeles atm) and Ksport GT Pro coilovers and maybe some other small stuff that i see fit. Update to come hopefully around this weekend.

The SR swap is really easy to do. It's almost (almost a plug and play type thing. If you got the red top your going to suffer from what I refer to as the RedTop syndrome. It's basically where the motor goes in and run fine for about 3 to 4 months and then it starts to fail. They are beat on pretty hard and most of then need to be refreshed. Common issues are oil starvation or rob bearings. Typically what I do is pull the valve cover and remove the cam oil spirters. I clean them really good and use a tooth pic to remove any blockage. Re-assemble and put a bit of fresh oil on the cam before I start it up. I had one redtop come with a bad wiring harness. Had to buy one from the community.

Yah if i can im gunna try and grab a blacktop but now the more and more im saving up im wondering if i should rebuild it and make a 400-500whp blacktop but only time will tell and go knows i dont wanna see my final cost if i decide to go that route :crying:

Small update. Finally go the car home with all the flooding we had and got sometime to asses what i have. Went through all the maint. fixed all the lights (still have to rewire the headlight motors) swapped the steelies for the stock 240 rims on the coupe that i had and started swapping out parts that were needed from one car to the other. Wish i had more to update with but been a little hectic.

#15 ·
Decent update. Finally found my engine and itll be on its way in 2 weeks Sr20det Black top with t28 turbo and aftermarket ecu (which i need to do research on cause never really heard of the company that made it)
Image

I do appologize for being inactive ill try to update when i have something to report back with. I also fixed my pop ups (girlfriends stipulation for duming all this money into this car XD)

Alright sorry for being going ghost for so long had a couple of things i had to take care of before i could go back to the build but expect regular updates from now on. To start off i picked up the black top and began my tear down.
Image

Image

I poped off the valve cover to check my internals aaaand....
Image

was actually very surprised with how super clean it was internally. Thank you previous owner . The one thing that had me confused was on the valve cover.
Image

Im not sure if you can see it in the picture but on the top right side there is something that has been super gasket sealed onto the bottom of the cover but not really stressing over it.
Image

So got the engine on the stand to start tearing the thing apart. started with the annoying stock fan to get some room but ran into a problem where the water pump pulley has one nut on it that just spins which makes me believe its stripped. Ill try at this again tomorrow.
Image

I started on the exhaust side since i knew this is where the most frustrating bolts would be from all of the heat rust and boy was i right -.-. Worst thing is i have to separate the t28 turbo from the stock elbow and exhaust manifold to put on the new one so not looking forward to that at all but for now im just concentrating on the block so i can get it painted and ready for the new parts to go on.
Image

After struggling with a single bolt on the exhaust manifold for legit an hour i finally got pretty much everything off of the exhaust side.
This is where i stopped for the night because it was hitting midnight and all i had been doing was driving all day to get the engine, engine lift, and engine stand all day so was getting tired. So tomorrow ill start on the intake side and maybe get some paint down on the block and prep the valve cover.

Nice job getting it from Jspec ;)

I am planning on running rotella after reading this thread and I remember fonix36 or wordsux on here (same person prety much) had advised on using that too.

If you have an aftermarket ecu, I would first check to see what turbo you have and the injectors. If they are both stock I would just try to find a stock ecu for under $100. They get a higher octane gasoline there so I suggest running the stock tune with 93 or whatever highest grade gasoline you can get until you get it tuned. It will run rich but its better than running a tuned ecu.

this is really good too

http://www.240sxforums.com/forums/sr20de-det/107130-my-s13-sr20det-prep.html

Frsport has a nice sr gasket kit and its only $100-120

Definitely buy a wiring specialties harness. See if you can find one on the zilvia.net marketplace for cheap. Some guy was selling a used version of the same exact harness for like $300 and mine was $600 new. I still recommend buying new but itll be okay if you're on a budget, just get some electrical contact cleaner from a hardware store and clean all connections.

Take your time with it and have fun man, theres no rush and quality builds do take time.

550cc injectors and t28 turbo so stock ecu wont work plus ill have a z32 maf on im not worried i know im gunna need a tune im not really rushing at the moment.

As far as gasket kits and harnesses i already picked an isis kit for gaskets and am already talking to wiring specialist for my harness so thatll mean ill have 1 chopped harness and 1 decent harness and the WS harness lol wires for days

Alright so not much to post today but a little progress. Today i moved onto the intake side
Image

Just fyi those hoses SUCK!
Also took care of the back side
Image

After going at it for a bit got everything cleared off and started scrubbing.
Image

Image

And got started with laying down some coats of primer.
Image

Image

This was really all i got done today didnt really wanna stay at it to long since i have work at 4am.
I did try to work on the turbo wile primer was drying in coats and ran into a huge problem.
Image

After trying for hours I couldnt get this one bolt off and now its rounded (always has to be one bolt). Tomorrow im gunna try to heat it till it glows and then hit it with some water and see if i cant get it busted loose but if that dosnt work guess i have to guy but something to cut this damn thing off. Hate rusted/rounded bolts -.-

Alright work week is over, christmas shopping is done, and first round of parts are getting ordered on Wednesday. Cont. where i left off with the turbo first, after 3 hours of pb blasting, heating, making a lfamthrower from the combination of the 2, and bending wrenches I finally managed to get that one bolt off.
Image

Image

After inspecting it further the one problem is a small bend in the turbine which probably means this turbos days are numbered but just gunna run it till it breaks and then upgrade then, as far as seals and everything its 100%. The cleaning and prep for paint on the turbo housings has started and ill post all the pictures once its ready.
After getting that done i moved back to the engine block.
Image

Image

About 5 coats of engine enamel later this was the final product which honestly im kinda satisfied with. Hopefully new parts that are silver dont super clash with how bright silver the block is but we'll tackle that once we get there.

Of course with overspray on the valve cover we couldnt just leave that there. I planned on painting it in the first place because it had some dings from shipping and had an idea of what i wanted it to look like.
Image

Started sanding down everything and filing down the grime on the raised letters
Image

Started with the raised letters. I dont have any pictures further of the process with them but the letters where getting painted black so i primed them and painted them first so the little crevs in between the letters wouldn't be an issue for masking when i did the body.
Image

Once they got painted black i began the long (and i do mean long) process of individually masking each letter from top to side. The white you see was me taking a tire crayon to the tape to i could find the outlines a bit better while cutting. This took me about 4 hours believe it or not to get set the way i wanted but rather put in the work so it comes out how i envision it.

Again i was dumb and didnt take pictures of my steps in painting but after laying down all my base coats it brought it back in my room for the night to cure and then i woke up to this.
Image

Image

I guess my puppy thought the freshly painted valve cover was a new toy for him so tore off the tape and played with the raised letters a bit R.I.P.

I went ahead and touched up the spots (basically doing all those steps a second time) and finally started laying down clear coat over all of it.
Image

Image

And this was the final project. Im a little disappointed with some spots on it that came up after the puppy incident but overall for the cost and reward of doing it myself im ok with it.

So for now what i have left for prep before parts go on is touching up some of the brackets, painting the turbo, and removing the old exhaust manifold studs that stayed in the block when i pulled the old one off. After that the engine should start being put back together. Until next time guys if i dont post before Christmas merry Christmas and happy holidays to everyone and i hope they all go great

#22 ·
Well before we get into anything id like to say i hope everyone had a great Christmas/holiday season and is looking forward to the new year. Meanwhile in VA we had a 80 degree Christmas day which was the perfect time to enjoy the vert but onto the meat of the thread cause :gc-wmsmiley-this-to.

My first round of parts (if it can be called that since it was only really 3 things) where ordered last Wednesday. So wile i waited for those to arrive I finished up some of the last bit of paint that I had in mind of doing.
First I started with the valve cover washers (didnt think the gold went well with the white) and gave those a nice coat of black and clear.
Image

Was ok with the results just need to find some black or neochrom bolts to go with them so hunting for those atm.
Image

Next I moved onto the turbo. What I decided to use with this was some VHC high temp paint (highest heat temp i could find) and just re did how it'd come stock with silver front black back since ill be using a bottom mount manifold no point in going all out on something that's gunna get barred.
Image

And the face
Image

Image

The valve cover and turbo sat under the tree wile i waited for parts.
Image

When my parts came in on Tuesday UPS decided to send my packages to two different hubs so the thing i got first was my ISR (ISIS) Gasket kit and my new exhaust manifold studs (damn things cost me $50) but honestly they were kind worth it for the ease of install.
Image

(Sorry for the bad quality there) but the only gasket i could really use where the valve cover ones for now and even with that i cant close up the cover because 1. I wanna get different bolts and don't wanna put the old ones on just to rip them back off and 2. I don't have any liquid gasket for the half moons so would of had to take it off for that reason too so the gasket kit is mostly sitting for now.
As for the studs i took out the old ones (not nearly as hard as i thought itd be from the rust that i saw) and installed my shinny new ones :dancingna
Image

Image

After waiting an extra day for UPS to get there ish together i finally received what has to be one of the nicest piece of automotive engineering iv ever held.
Image

Image

I still am kinda drooling over how nice Tomei managed to make this exhaust manifold. Sadly enough although it came with new studs for the turbo connection it did not come with new bolts to hold the turbo in place :bawling: and i refuse to muck up this mani with those nasty bolts i pulled off. Plus i kinda sorta maybe snapped one of them (but that's besides the point).
So for now iv lose attached it to the black so it can sit pretty but since ill have to pull it off to install the braided turbo lines and put on the turbo with more ease it just sitting on hand tight.
Image

Image

For now this is all I have for a wile (my new puppy needs surgery that's gunna cost a minimum of $800 so no car parts next check :bawling:)
My goal is to divide the engine into sections and get it done side by side so for the exhaust side what i need is braided turbo lines, my new wastegate, bolts for the mani into the turbo, and elbow. After that i think i might tackle the ignition or top side of the engine and move on from there. Until then ill check in as often as I can. Have a great new years guys :wavetowel2:
